This has nothing directly to do with Morocco. I read this on the Washington Post Reader this morning and it touched me. Take a look at what I saw this morning…
Thousands of Hindus celebrate the spring festival of Holi by throwing tinted powder and perfume on each other — creating a breathtaking hypercolor frenzy. Filmmakers at the production company Variable decided to capture the event with a Phantom Flex, a high-speed camera that can record upwards of 10,000 frames per second. Suspending these moments in time, they want viewers to realize that “the fast paced lifestyles of our generation result in many not taking the necessary step back to soak in the existing world around us.” Their goal, they say, “is to help viewers further appreciate and take notice of the beauty in life and culture.”
Mara participated in this festival in Fiji 🙂 She thought it was very cool!
Cool! I’d love to experience it!
We were in India during Holi in 2006; the tinted powder is tempera paint and it causes problems with people who get it in their eyes. Some kids who don’t have the powder will throw anything else that is available; the Swedish couple who were seated two rows ahead of us were pelted in the face by fresh donkey dung that was flung through the open window of the slow moving train.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Ew. So I guess there’s not always that much beauty in life or culture then… Thanks for throwing some reality into the mix! 🙂
By the way, I also thought how horrible it would be for the lungs to breathe in that powder…
Sorry to rain on your parade. At the time there were news stories on Indian TV advising people to use caution or refrain from the activity altogether; there were reports of people throwing various kinds of dry chemicals. My understanding is that the practice is not a particularly old custom although I have not done any research on the subject.
…well, at least the video I posted was beautiful! I’m crossing this activity off of my bucket list as of right now. (I long ago crossed off that tomato-throwing “celebration” in Italy as well…)
What about Hell Night in Detroit?
THAT’S staying on the list! As is “4th of July in Park Rapids.” 🙂
