Returning to Fes from Volubilis we passed two women hitchhiking. “Do you mind?’ Mokhtar asked. Of course not so we stopped to pick them up. “She’s an old lady,” he added. I agreed. They both looked like old ladies though of different gradients of old. In they hopped after many smiles and handshakes, hugs and ‘chukrans.’ Beautiful women with bright faces. Their story? Mother and daughter. Mother is on her way to Fes (50km away) to have neck surgery – – or hopes to. She was a maid for some people in Dades Valley and when her neck gave her so many troubles, the family let her go. Daughter came to get her and was so surprised how bad she really is. So now she is taking care of her old mom. Mother is 49. The “old lady” is 49.

Wow! Live it up now. I’m 2 steps from the grave!
Oh I know! I’m beyond the grave, in Moroccan years!

I’m confused. I thought the mother and the old lady were the same person? Did they tell you they were mother and daughter? Or did you make that assumption? And are they both really 49? I feel like this is a riddle that I’m not getting.
Without re-reading it to make sure it makes sense, I’m answering. Glad to know you’re reading! The mother (a.k.a. old woman) is 49. The daughter younger, although also looks oldish. So the “old lady” to which Mokhtar referred, is 49.

Call off Marilyn vos Savant! I get it now!
The old lady is 49! I thought you were giving the ages of both characters in your story, but I understand now that you have only told your dear readers the age of one character: The mother (aka, the old lady).
We can assume that the daughter’s age can be surmised by this equation: 49 minus the age at which the old mother/lady bore her daughter = daughter’s current age. Might you be able to find out the age at which she bore said daughter? I for one would like to know!
Oh good! It makes sense! And believe you me, Laurel Lindahl, I want the age of that daughter as well! I couldn’t even begin to guess! But perhaps 30-35? Hard to tell… And, since this was all translated to me, I was not able to ask the pertinent questions like you know I would’ve wanted to!
Laura, I’m with you! I think this needs to be resolved by Dear Marilyn. Certainly there is some resolve to this.
I meant Laurel! And after re-reading, it makes total sense, the mother was 49 and the old lady was 49.
Wow! I didn’t realize I was so confusing! The mother was 49 – – and the point is, she’s considered old! The mother was 49. The person whom Mokhtar said was an ‘old lady’ was only 49!!
